Within the next month, I should have enough info to post a preview of the upcoming 2016-2017 basketball season for the Trojans. The 2016-2017 schedule is posted below.
Although the final roster is a long way off from being finalized, it looks as if size will once again be an obstacle that the Trojans will have to overcome. Right now, Kendal Reynolds is the tallest varsity player at 6-3. He is on track to become another 1,000 point scorer in PHS history, as he has tallied 917 points thus far. Reese Johnson, a 6-1 junior, is the other starter returning from a year ago. DJ Eley, a 5-8 junior, Daniel Jordan, a 6-2 junior, and Michael Malone, a 5-10 senior, are the other projected starters. All 3 started some games last season.
Matt Payton is the new JV coach, taking over for Jay Lucas. Payton was video coordinator for Coach Collins two years ago and has coached freshmen basketball at PHS previously.
Coach Eugene Collins will be entering his 8th season at PHS, with an overall record of 122-48, including 2 Final 4 appearances, a regional runnerup, two SEOAL titles and 1 OVC title. Collins’ 8 years at the helm is surpassed only by George Heller (1952-1968), and Red Hopkins (1926-1936).
Portsmouth enters this season as the 8th winningest program in Ohio history, with an overall record of 1,417 wins, 753 losses. The 15 state appearances are tied with Cleveland Villa-Angela St.Joseph for the 2nd most all time. The Trojans have an overall state tournament record of 16-11 (Sweet Sixteen, Elite 8,and Final 4 formats all included). PHS has an outstanding record of 12-7 in Final 4 play. The Trojans most recent state trips were in 2011 and 2012, which was the first time in school history making back to back appearances in the OHSAA state tourney. The 12 Final 4 wins rank 5th all time in Ohio, tied with Dayton Dunbar.
Oct.20,2016: Talked to Coach Collins and he said that the participating numbers below varsity level are good. He anticipates about 12-13 players for both the freshmen and JV squads. Tryouts should be in about 2 weeks and then I will have a better idea of what the varsity roster will look like, and will post it as soon as the roster is finalized.
