Highlights: The Trojans beat the undefeated Cavaliers in the 1951 district final 53-51, beat Chillicothe once again in 1961 in the district final 52-51 (Trojans would go on to win the state). The 1978 state champion PHS squad beat Chillicothe in the regular season 62-54. The 1988 state champion Trojans beat CHS in the regular season, while the 2011 and 2012 state tournament teams enjoyed regular season wins over the Cavaliers. The 2012 win by PHS was the Trojans first at CHS since 1998. Chillicothe beat the Trojans 66-50 on Feb.11, 2014 to take a 44-43 series lead. CHS has won 18 of the last 21 meetings. On Dec.27, 2014, Chillicothe won at Portsmouth 66-52 in the Wendy’s Classic. Although the Cavaliers lead the all time series, the Trojans are 9-4 vs. Chillicothe in tournament play, including district championship wins in 1950, 1951, 1960, and 1961 (4-0 record).

Highlights: Portsmouth beat Wheelersburg in the 2011 regional semifinal 45-39, the first time the Trojans and Pirates met past the district tournament. PHS is 5-4 in tournament play vs. the Burg, winning in 1978, 1983, 1987, 2011, and 2012. PHS handed Wheelersburg its most lopsided loss in the series, as the Trojans beat the Pirates 63-32 at WHS in 2012. Wheelersburg beat PHS 45-42 in the 2013 sectional. The Trojans beat the Pirates 42-38 on February 5, 2014. Portsmouth beat Wheelersburg 67-49 on Dec.26, 2014 in the Wendy’s Classic at PHS. Portsmouth won at Wheelersburg 56-55 on Feb.10, 2016. Series standing: 41-16 Portsmouth
Highlights: Portsmouth has swept Gallia Academy twice each of the last 4 years in SEOAL play. In 1982, PHS escaped with an 62-60 sectional win over the Blue Devils, and in 1988 beat GAHS again in the tourney, this time in the district semifinals 46-37. The Trojans ended the Blue Devils season in the 2001 sectional with a 53-39 win. PHS defeated Gallia Academy at GAHS on Jan.10, 2014 by a score of 49-24. The Trojans beat Gallia Academy in the final game of the 2013-2014 regular season by a score of 67-36, making it a two game sweep of the Blue Devils for 5 consecutive seasons. Portsmouth beat Gallia Academy 72-47 on Dec.5, 2014 in the first game of the 2014-2015 season. On Jan.24, 2015, Portsmouth defeated Gallia Academy 54-49 to complete a 6 year sweep of the Blue Devils (12-0). Jan.15, 2016: Portsmouth won at Gallia Academy 67-62. Series standing: 46-28 Portsmouth
Highlights: The Trojans are the only school that leads the series against Kentucky’s all-time winningest program (at least 20 games in a series). PHS hammered the Tomcats in 1990 with a 110-50 OKAC win. At one point in OKAC play, Portsmouth had defeated Ashland 11 straight times. Jason Taylor’s 3 pointer at the buzzer gave the Trojans a 57-56 win in 1989 at AHS.

Huntington (WV)

Series standing: 19-13 Portsmouth
Highlights: The Trojans have won the last 2 games vs. the Highlanders (formerly the Pony Express), those being in 2000 and 1994. Huntington beat the 1978 state champion Trojans in the regular season. PHS and HHS won the state championships in their respective states in 1961, but did not play each other. The 1931 state champion Trojans swept two from the Pony Express, while the 1934 team also beat HHS.

Special note: Going into the 2013-2014 season, Portsmouth has compiled a 28-0 record vs. Logan, Jackson, Gallia Academy, and Marietta in SEOAL play the last 4 years.
